Q. What is the Annual Fund?
A. The Annual Fund is a fundraising effort to increase the school’s resources for investing in critical initiatives. Donations to the Annual Fund directly benefit our current students and teachers and allow the school to make improvements and breakthrough innovations to our academic and extracurricular programs. Funds raised through the Annual Fund go towards purchasing new technology, equipment, and classroom and library materials, supporting student scholarships (Tuition Reduction Program), funding new learning initiatives, supporting the performing arts, music, athletics and art programs, and increasing professional development to attract and retain the finest teachers.
Q. Why does FIS ask for donations?
A. Frankfurt International School is a not-for-profit independent school that receives no yearly subsidies from the German government. The school relies on tuition and fees to support its existing programs and maintain it grounds and buildings as well as to continuously innovate, improve, and modernize to deliver the highest standard of education in state-of-the-art facilities. Charitable contributions allow us to invest better and faster to achieve our mission and to ensure that our students receive the best possible education and personal development to prepare them for higher learning and professional pursuits.
Q. Why doesn't FIS just raise tuition instead of asking for donations?
A. To ensure that FIS thrives as a school and multicultural home to 1,770 students, we need to invest at a level higher than what we can pass on to current FIS families through tuition and fees. Through fundraising, we can join together those who are receiving and those who have benefited from an outstanding FIS education and experience to support the academic excellence and the long-term future of the school.
Q. Who gives to the Annual Fund?
A. The Annual Fund receives donations from our worldwide community of parents, alumni (including former students and parents), Board of Trustees, administration, faculty and staff, parents, business partners, corporations, and friends. Contributions are tax-deductible for U.S. and German taxpayers and may be matched by employers, effectively doubling a donor’s contribution to the Annual Fund.
Q. How and when should I make a donation?
A. FIS accepts donations in Euros (€) and U.S. dollars ($) through bank transfer, checks, credit cards, securities, and cash. Online giving is an easy way of donating to the Annual Fund through our secure server. Our fiscal year is from 1 July to 30 June and donations are accepted at any time during this period. Q. How much should I give?
A. We value and welcome donations of any size. Annual Fund contributions over the past two years have ranged from €5 to €20.000. Each contribution brings us one step closer to our goals and many small gifts add up to large ones. So, how much you give is not as important as whether you give! High participation rates also reflect the level of support for the school and its leadership from the FIS community, an important criterion to corporations and foundations considering major gift donations.
Q. Do I have an influence on how my donation will be used?
A. Most donations to the Annual Fund are unrestricted gifts and go into the general operating budget of the school, established and approved each year by the FIS Board of Trustees. Charitable contributions can also be made to specific FIS programs and projects – all wishes for restricted gifts should be clearly designated at the time of the donation. Examples of restricted donations to the Annual Fund are student scholarships (TRP), Rosetta Stone language program, and the Alumni Courtyard.
Q. What is a matching gift?
A. Your employer may match your gift to a not-for-profit school like FIS. It is a great way to effectively double your donation to the school at no extra charge to you. Please ask your employer’s human resources department to see if a matching gift is possible. Please contact us should you need further help or information.
Q. Is my Annual Fund donation tax deductible?
A. Frankfurt International School e.v. and Frankfurt International School Foundation, Inc. are both not-for-profit organizations recognized by the German and U.S. Internal Revenue Service, respectively, as tax exempt organizations. Donations are tax deductible to the extent permitted by the German and US Tax codes. Please donate using the currency that is related to the country in which you intend to use the tax-deductible contribution.
Q. Can my donation remain anonymous?
A. FIS publishes a list of the names of donors without contribution amounts in the audited financial statements each year. Should you wish to have your charitable contribution remain anonymous, please specify this when making the donation or contact us with your request
Q. Does a donation increase my chances of admission to FIS?
A. No. A financial contribution to FIS is a sign of support for the school but it does not influence decisions on admissions. All students and families will receive the same high level of service from the school regardless of whether or not they make a donation to the Annual Fund.
