 | FIS Visits the Saalburg 03/04/2009 The Saalburg - just 6 km from Frankfurt International School and close to Bad Homburg - is the only fully restored Roman fort of the wall (‘Limes’) the Romans built in the 1st century A.D. to defend the Empire against Germanic invaders. This fortified frontier stretched from the Rhine to the Black Sea and in 2005 was granted the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it one of the most important and recognized symbols of human heritage and putting it on a list ranging from the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal in India and Stonehenge to the Statute of Liberty.

 | Glenntallica Wins Battle of the Bands! 05/03/2009 The annual Battle of the Bands took place on Tuesday, 3 March. Six bands competed this year, with only the first place winner from 2008, Jemeration, participating for a second time. But there were many familiar faces in new constellations with very creative band names like Faceless Arcade, Biji Soy Pop, All In and Elevator Music. New this year were the quiet musical intervals performed by Sean Duggan and Tina Steen. The jury, composed of Vit König and Dorothea Rincke from the Academy and Beate Zimpel, awarded the band Glenntallica the coveted prize sponsored by the Academy of Stage Arts in Oberursel: a recording session for a single on a CD.
Thanks to the emcees, organizers and technicians it was a very successful evening!

Winter Band Concert or 26th Annual Eddie Awards? 23/02/2009 Parents and guests arrived at the Stadthalle in Oberursel for the Winter Band Concert only to find it had been cancelled. Instead they were welcomed to the 26th annual Eddie Awards, named in honor of the famous Mr. D (for Dettlaff), and put together by the 16 senior band members.
The suspense mounted each time one of the jury opened the envelope and announced the award for the next music piece, which was then performed for the audience. Among the awards given was the Best Musical Award for Fiddler on the Roof, the Best Film Soundtrack for James Bond Returns and the Best Spiritual for Amazing Grace. The flashy and quick-stepping Jazz Band won the award for the Best TV Song with their rendition of the Batman Theme. Soloists on the flute, piano, marimba and drums as well as duets, trios and quartets were part of the entertainment program for the audience. The beginners had their chance to play as well.
The culmination of the evening was of course the award given to Best Director, which landed with Jan Dettlaff. The seniors presented him with a golden record and surprised him with a performance of a piece they had played in Beginners Band, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, from the Lion King. It was lovely evening for one and all.

 | Professor Hyun-Sik Min of Seoul National University Visit FIS 06/02/2009 Professor Hyun-Sik Min from Seoul National University visited Frankfurt International School from 27 - 31 January. During his very successful time with us he talked to many Korean parents, all of our Korean students and many of our teachers and administrators.
In particular Professor Min stressed the importance of students continuing to develop their mother tongue; he worked with students to help them develop their grammar and expressive writing and he spent time learning about our International Baccalaureate (IB) program.
Professor Min’s visit is one step towards establishing a partnership between FIS and Seoul University, with the ultimate goal of helping Korean university admissions directors to understand and value the rigorous nature of the IB program. We then hope our Korean students who apply to Korean universities will have their efforts in the IB recognized and used positively in their applications.

 | Seol Lal - Korean New Year 04/02/2009 Last Friday, 30 January, FIS Primary students were treated to a presentation about Seol Lal, the Korean New Year, during assembly. Korean students from grade 1 in traditional costumes sang songs, accompanied on the piano by one of their peers, while another one directed the choir. Korean parents presented a short film and taught everyone the Korean New Year wish “Saehae bok mani badeuseyo”. They had even brought traditional costumes for Primary School Principal Teresa Dupre and Assistant Principal Neil Marshall-Inns to wear! After the presentations, all grade 1 students stayed on to experience traditional Korean games and activities and dress up to have their photo taken. It was a wonderful and very colorful occasion!
