University and Academic Advising

Counselors meet with students individually to discuss future goals and plan course choices for the remainder of their high school education. Students are asked to think about their strengths and weaknesses, both in and out of the classroom, and how that translates into academic interests.

Counselors meet with students to focus on academic goals and post-graduation plans. In the spring of Grade 10, course recommendations are made based on academic performance and goals. Grade 10 students and their parents are encouraged to attend relevant university information evenings and presentations held by visiting universities throughout the year.

Testing: Most Grade 10 students take the PSAT as part of a school-wide testing initiative. The Pre-ACT is also offered to Grade 10 and 11 students who are considering taking the ACT. Registration for these tests is done via the Counseling Office and typically takes place in October.

Three full-time Upper School counselors work with students (and their parents) to support their academic goals and university applications, both in group and individual settings. FIS also has a Korean University advisor to assist families with the application process to schools in Korea.

Counselors also advise students on tests required for college admissions. Typically, students begin preparing and registering for exams in Grade 11; most students will start taking exams in the spring of Grade 11.

Parent information sessions are held at different times during the year to address the university admissions process, and students and parents are also encouraged to meet with visiting university representatives throughout the year.  

Testing: Grade 11 students may opt to take the PSAT, which is offered on-site at FIS; registration is via the Upper School Counseling Office. If students are thinking of applying to North American or Asian colleges, it is recommended they take this test as practice.

Test dates are listed on our web calendar and on this page. All SAT registration and payment is completed online at www.collegeboard.org; ACT registration can be completed online at www.actstudent.org. Although tests are administered at FIS, space is limited and therefore early registration is recommended.
